Lois Filipovich

Lois Filipovich of Harrisonburg went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Alex, and is survived by her daughter, Alexa (Henry); granddaughters, Kayla and Amanda; brother, Earl Shirkey; and son-in-law, George.

She was a former member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg and had moved to Columbus, Ohio, in 2001 to be near her daughter and grandchildren. Though she was born in Harrisonburg and returned there after retirement, she spent over a quarter century living in the Rockville, Md., area. While she was employed by the Maryland school system, the U.S. armed services, WSVA and VEPCO among others, her most satisfying work may have been as a devoted volunteer for the Valley AIDS Network at a time when participation in such endeavors was rare. She was a special lady with a loving heart and welcoming spirit who took conversation to a level beyond art. She was a great listener and reminiscer. She will be sorely missed by all.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 725 S. High St., Harrisonburg, on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at 11 a.m.
