Virginia F. May

Virginia Frances May, 93, a resident of Singers Glen, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, at Oak Lea Nursing Home.

Mrs. May was born Jan. 10, 1919, in Rockingham County, and was the daughter of the late Foster P “Toots” Ritchie and Gertrude Hartman and was raised by her father and stepmother, Claire Kline Ritchie.

She was employed by Metro Pants until 1970 and then later worked for Leggett’s. She was a member of the Home Extension Club, Golden Age Club, and was an active member of the Donovan Memorial United Methodist Church.

During her time at VMRC, she was very active and participated in every activity she could. She and her husband were also members of the Grand Promenade Square Dance Club.

On April 17, 1943, she married Robert F. May, who passed away on Oct. 3, 2008.

Surviving are two daughters, Stashia Ann Kline and husband, Dennis, of Linville and Patty Louise Golightly and husband, Gary “Ike” of Winchester; a son, William “Bill” Franklin May and wife, Becky, of Harrisonburg; six grandchildren, Michele Propst of Linville, David Kline of Lacey Spring, Daniel Kline of Singers Glen and Eric Golightly and Jason Golightly, both of Winchester, and Kelly May Brown of Harrisonburg; seven great-grandchildren, Grace E. Propst, Aydan A. Kline, Echo E. Kline and Iris I. Kline, Caitlyn Golightly, Jacob Golightly and Ethan Golightly; and two nieces, two nephews and a number of cousins.

Mrs. May was preceded in death by her half brothers, Jack Ritchie and Franklin Ritchie.

The Rev. Jim Radford will conduct a funeral service Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Donovan Memorial United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Singers Glen Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the McMullen Funeral Home Friday from 7 until 8 p.m.

The family would like to express sincere thanks to the staff at VMRC for the past 3½ years of their care and compassion.
