Terrie Dean values the art of good conversation. One of her favorite holiday pastimes is gathering around the kitchen table with relatives and simply talking for hours on end.
All I want for Christmas is normal.
Dennis Carter, 80, of Harrisonburg, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital with his family by his side.
Dennis was born Nov. 25, 1932, in Harrisonburg, and was the son of the late Harry W. Carter and Pauline R. Dallard Carter. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Elon and Allen Rhodes and Harry and Charles Carter; a daughter, Jennifer Schoolfield; and stepdaughter, Millie M.W. Lewis.
He served five years in the U.S. Army and was educated at the Lucy F. Simms School. He worked at Eddie Edward Signs and was a merchandise manager at J.C. Penney and Montgomery Ward, before moving from Harrisonburg to Tidewater, where he was employed with Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority. He was a devoted brother and father. He loved artistry, carpentry, fishing and Edith’s cat, Abbey.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria Howard M. Carter; sons, Jeffrey N. Carter and wife, Rose, of Baltimore, Md., and Christopher Dennis Carter and wife, Pamela, of Chesapeake, Va.; a stepdaughter, Julie M. Patterson; 35 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Edith C. Nickens and Pauline C. Brown, both of Harrisonburg.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg with Minister Anthony L. Carter and the Rev. Monty Royster officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be private at Newtown Cemetery in Harrisonburg.
