Terrie Dean values the art of good conversation. One of her favorite holiday pastimes is gathering around the kitchen table with relatives and simply talking for hours on end.

Preston E. Burchard, 92, of Harrisonburg, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
Preston was born in Ames, Iowa, on April 22, 1920, a son of the late Edwin and Fern Preston Burchard.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army in Europe with the Army Corps of Engineers and as a chaplain’s assistant. Preston was a member of Wakeman’s Grove Church of the Brethren and had worked in many areas of C&P Telephone in Washington, D.C., including assignments directly involved with several presidential inaugurations.
Preston is survived by his wife, Nancy Burchard; daughter, Duffy Regan of Sydney, Australia; three sons, Edwin Burchard and Robert Burchard, both of Columbia, Mo., and Jonathan Burchard, of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; sister, Glendon Penske of Schenectady, N.Y.; brother, Lowell Burchard of Arlington, Va.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service officiated by Chaplain Paul O’Gorek will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at Meredith Chapel, Sunnyside Retirement Community, Harrisonburg, Va.
