Terrie Dean values the art of good conversation. One of her favorite holiday pastimes is gathering around the kitchen table with relatives and simply talking for hours on end.

Lowell Victor Sharpes Jr., 88, of Boonsboro, Md., and formerly of Broadway, died Feb. 11, 2013, at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, Md.
He was born May 9, 1924, in Harrisonburg and was a son of the late Lowell V. and Lucille Kinzie Sharpes Sr.
Lowell was a member of the Church of the Brethren, where he enjoyed teaching the adult Sunday school class. After attending Bridgewater College, Lowell served in alternative service as a smoke jumper in Montana, making 21 jumps on forest fires and three voyages to Europe as a sea cowboy for the Heifer Project. Lowell was a poultryman and retired from Holly Farms, where he was known to work on behalf of his customers.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Hilda Hetrick, his second wife, the former Iris Coffman, and a son, Lowell V. Sharpes III.
He is survived by two sons, Douglas A. Sharpes of Maryland and Robert D. Sharpes of Broadway; three brothers, Donald Sharpes of Dayton and Wayne and Raymond Sharpes, both of Ohio; two sisters, Helen Radcliffe of Ohio and Velva Rowan of Florida; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Dr. Wayne Sharpes and the Rev. David Radcliffe will conduct a funeral service Friday at 1 p.m. at the Grandle Funeral Home Chapel in Broadway. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg.
