Joseph Geil Shank

Joseph Geil Shank, 95, a resident of Harrisonburg, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Shank was born April 14, 1917, in Broadway, Va., and was a son of the late Samuel Aaron and Mary Katherine “Kitty” Geil Shank. He was a man of God, a family man, and a farmer.  He was a member of Trissels Mennonite Church.

On Jan. 30, 1945, he was married to the former Sybil Marion Koger, who preceded him in death on March 14, 2011.

Surviving are his children, Arneda Faye Steiner and husband, Glenn, of Penn Laird; Joseph Geil “J.G.” Shank II and wife, Linda Sue, of Broadway; Fern Shank Miller and husband, David, of Lakewood, Colo.; Evelyn Yvonne Mast and husband, Harlan, of Canton, Mich.; Nelson Lionel Shank and wife, Barbara, of Stuarts Draft; and Charles Samuel Shank and wife, Amei, of Beijing, China; a brother, Stuart Aaron Shank of Harrisonburg; 14 grandchildren, Rebecca “Becky” Oswald, Janna Bowers, LaVonne Ramella, Michael Shank, Joseph Geil “Joey” Shank III, Jerrel Mast, Lorissa Skelton, Christy Shank, Meghan Cela, Stuart Shank, Benjamin Shank, Zachary Shank, Andrew Shank and Amei Nicole Shank; five stepgrandchildren, Scott Ijames, Tony Ijames, Winnie Ma, Karyn Withrow, and Andrew Gluba Jr.; 18 great-grandchildren and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Shank was preceded in death by two grandsons, Anthony Glenn Steiner and Weston Lloyd Mast.

Minister Harold Miller will conduct a memorial service Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at 3 p.m. at Trissels Mennonite Church. Burial will be held privately at Lindale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at McMullen Funeral Home.
