Donald V.C. Birrell Jr.

Donald Van Court Birrell Jr., 87, of Harrisonburg, died Feb. 18, 2013, at his home.

Mr. Birrell was born Dec. 6, 1925, in Quincy, Mass., and was a son of the late Donald and Ruth Eldridge Birrell Sr.

He was a graduate of Washington and Lee High School in Arlington, Va., then served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and graduated from The College of William and Mary.   Mr. Birrell worked for the City of Harrisonburg Transportation Department until his retirement in 1991.  He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.

On July 2, 1955, he married the former Jane Lokey, who survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Karen Rankin and her husband, Gary, of Penn Laird; one brother, Kirk Birrell and his wife, Natalie, of Huntington, Mass.; one granddaughter, Niki Lane and her husband, Bobby; great- grandchildren, Addison and Crosby Lane, all of San Diego, Calif.; a number of nephews; stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

Mr. Birrell was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Tanner Lane.

The Rev. Jerry John and the Rev. Bob Talbott will conduct a graveside service Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Woodbine Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice in his memory.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Southern Care Hospice, Amedisys Home Health Care Inc. and Continuing Care Home Health Services for their care and assistance over the past several months.
