Alton “Doc” Leon Dean, 64, of Crimora, passed away suddenly Sunday, June 23, 2013, at his home.
Alton was born in Harrisonburg on Sept. 9, 1948, and was a son of the late Eugene Samuel and Gloria (Knighten) Dean.
Doc retired from the Virginia Department of Forestry in Crimora. He was a lifetime member of the Grottoes Rescue Squad and past member of the Grottoes and Weyers Cave fire departments.
Doc is survived by five sisters, Dale Dean Miller (Donnie) of Grottoes, Linda Dean Roadcap of Grottoes, Christine Bibb and fiancé, Meade Shuey, of Swoope, Jean Cutlip (Clyde) of Warm Springs, and Donna Riggleman (Danny) of Grottoes; four brothers, Robert G. Dean (Bonnie) of Stuarts Draft, Wayne Dean (Kay) of Mount Sidney, Jeff Dean (Donna) of Dayton and Larry Dean (Carolyn) of Staunton. He is also survived by a special companion, Barbara Dean of Crimora, and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Dewitt Dean.
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, June 27, 2013, at Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes with the Rev. Homer Fraizer officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Weyers Cave.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at the funeral home in Grottoes or at the home of Donna and Danny Riggleman anytime.
