Stanley T. ‘Tom’ Stickley


Stanley Thomas “Tom” Stickley, 87, of Grottoes, passed away Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at his home.


He was born in Augusta County on Nov. 15, 1926, and was a son of the late Jacob Mose and Amanda Mae (Grimm) Stickley.


Tom worked as a painter for Galen Myers for several years and had served in the Army Air Forces during World War II. He was a car enthusiast and enjoyed working on them in his free time.


He was united in marriage on Aug. 7, 1954, to Betty Jean (Birt) Stickley, who survives.


Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three daughters, Elizabeth Jean Jenkins of Grottoes, Lois Leigh and husband, Donnie, of Mount Solon, and Patricia Gibson and husband, Gerald, of Grottoes; two sons, Roger Stickley of Panama, and David Stickley of Grottoes; and a sister, Betty Roadcap of Richmond.  He is also survived by eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by two sons, Darrell Lynn Stickley and Stanley Thomas Stickley Jr.; seven brothers, infant, Joe Stickley, Roy Stickley, James Stickley, Guy Stickley, Roland Stickley, Mose Stickley and Carl Stickley; and three sisters, Thelma Thornton Reed, Trinkles Halterman and June McMickens.


A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes with the Rev. Sally Robinson and Eugene K. Souder officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at Mount Horeb Church. Burial will be private.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sentara-RMH Hospice, 2010 Health Campus Drive, Harrisonburg, VA 22801, and/or Mount Horeb Presbyterian Church, 4517 Rockfish Road, Grottoes, VA 24441.
