I was trying to navigate I-81 North last week, and saw a lot of car texting, crazy long-haul truck jockeying, and general demolition derby driver action. I lived in Boston for 30 years; these folks were putting MassHoles to shame with their erratic driving.
There was some terrible accident near Grottoes miles ahead of me that caused a 9-mile backup for hours (all lanes were closed). I knew enough to divert to U.S. 11 at Staunton, but even then, U.S. 11 was starting to get a bit nuts with heavy trucks.
Interstate 81. Maybe VDOT should erect signs from Harrisonburg to Staunton that read “I-81. Travel at your own risk. Or, better yet, don’t even bother.” What is it about that 30-mile stretch of highway?
