The Associated Press recently reported that, “ESPN broadcaster, Bob Griese, has been suspended one week for a remark he made about NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya.”
It seems that Griese jokingly speculated on the absence of Montoya from a graphic showing leading NASCAR drivers, and said that the Colombian native was “out having a taco.” Ex-president Jimmy Carter and many DN-R readers will certainly agree that the comment was totally racist, and akin to criticism of Barack Obama.
I wonder what the reaction would have been if the driver in question had been named Reginald Tewksbury-Frothingham, and the broadcaster had said that he had probably stopped for a spot of steak-and-kidney pud. Or, perhaps said that Boris Vissarionovich Machienkov had to finish his plate of blinis. Or, for that matter, said that Billy-Bob Redneck got sidetracked at McDonald’s.
