Drivers Need To Know English Posted 2009-11-04

No apology is necessary in Texas for ticketing unlawful drivers. Last month, a woman was ticketed and fined for “not speaking English.” First of all, she made an illegal U-turn, which prompted the stop. Then, she could not produce a driver’s license, nor speak English.

There are safety issues when road signs cannot be understood. Whether it is a rookie officer or a veteran officer, what are they expected to do? Communication barriers are tremendous safety hazards.

Of course, now she’s been so wronged as to have a legal case to file against the city! I wonder if her attorney speaks Spanish or English — maybe Spanglish?
