Margaret Elizabeth Baker

Margaret Elizabeth Baker (nee Rountree), RN, age 82, of Kirkwood, Missouri, died June 15, 2009.

She was the wife of Joseph Willard Baker, mother of John T. (Susan) Baker and the late Laura Elizabeth (Earl) Baker-Hall; grandmother of Simon D. Baker and Avery H. Baker, and step-grandmother of Alicia and Kimberly Hall; sister of Sherley (Marjorie) Rountree, Virginia R. Smith, Norma R. Hinant, and deceased siblings Thomas B. Rountree, Murray Rountree, Winifred R. Watts, Brantley Rountree and Doris P. Rountree; and aunt of Michael Baker and sister-in-law of Phyllis Baker, both of Luray.

Mrs. Baker was born in Gates County, N.C., the daughter of the late Thomas W. Rountree and Elizabeth Hurdle Rountree. Margaret served in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II. She graduated from the Norfolk General Hospital School of Nursing. Mrs. Baker also attended the University of Virginia and Old Dominion University. She was employed as an instructor at Riverside Hospital, Newport News, Va., and also worked in nursing in Virginia, Florida and St. Louis.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 820 Lockett Road, Kirkwood, Mo., 63122, on Saturday, June 27, at 10:30 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church. (Paid Obituary)



Robert Clinton Jenkins, Sr.

NEW MARKET - Robert Clinton Jenkins, Sr., 72, passed away on Friday, June 19, 2009, at the Life Care in New Market.

Mr. Jenkins was born on Sept. 19, 1936, in Elkwood, and was the son of the late Clinton and Nora Jenkins. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean conflict.

He is survived by his wife Norma Ann Jenkins, his children Robert Jenkins, Jr., William Jenkins and wife Nancey of Timberville, Glema Rexrode of New Market and a step son Donald Monroe of Rineyville, Ky.; eight grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by two brothers George Jenkins, Charles Jenkins and a sister Jean Menefee and step son David Monroe.

A funeral service was conducted on Thursday, June 24, at the Found and Sons Chapel with the Rev. Jon Heddleston officiating.
Interment was in the Washington Masonic Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Jenkins's name to the Reynolds Memorial Baptist Church 3948 Sperryville Pike, Sperryville, Va.

Arrangements were handled by the Found and Sons Funeral chapel in Culpeper.



Jean Delores Kelley Jennings

WOODSTOCK - Jean Delores Kelley Jennings, 81, passed away on Friday, June 19, 2009.

Mrs. Jennings was born in 1928 in Clear Spring, Md., and was the daughter of the late John and Lethia Eichelberger Kelley. She was a 1946 graduate of Clear Spring High School and was a homemaker. She was formally a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Winchester. She was a member of the Doe Club of Elks Lodge No. 867, the Lioness Club of Winchester and a 53-year member of Golden Rule Chapter No. 69, Order of the Eastern Star, in Martinsburg, W.Va.

She is survived by her husband, Donald L. Jennings whom she married on Dec. 20, 1946, in Clear Spring, Md.; four children, Donna McIlwee, and husband Charles, of Winchester, Karen Rooney, and husband John, of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., Mark Jennings, and wife, Vicki, of Cooksville, Md. and Kevin Jennings, and wife Wendy, of Manassas; and six grandchildren, Chad, Nicolette, Katie, Eric, Jordan and Ryan. She was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

A funeral service was conducted on Tuesday, June 23, at the Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel in Winchester, with David Owings officiating.

Interment was in the Shenandoah Memorial Park.

John Wayne Whittington

WOODSTOCK - John Wayne Whittington, 67, passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at the Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Whittington was born on Nov. 19, 1941, in Williamsport, Md., and was the son of the late John William “Bill” and Lillie Irene Richard Whittington. He was aU.S. Army veteran and retired in 1997 from Johns Manville. He attended St. Luke Brethren Church. He loved to fish, hunt, garden and work on lawn mowers and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Cora Showalter and Frances Whittington.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Riffee Whittington; son, John Whittington and wife, Amy of Woodstock; daughter, Dawn Gilmore and husband, Rob of Edinburg; three sisters, Phyllis Jurney of Woodstock, Elizabeth Matthews and husband, J.D. of Woodstock and Maxine Anderson and husband, Floyd of Ill.; Christine Murphy and husband, Jim; four grandchildren, Olivia Whittington, Joshua Whittington, Derek Gilmore and Abigail Gilmore and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was conducted on Saturday, June 20, at the Dellinger Funeral Home in Woodstock with the Rev. Anthony Keim.
Burial was in the St. Luke Cemetery.

Patricia Spencer

MOUNT JACKSON  - Patricia Spencer, 71, passed away on Saturday, June 20, 2009, at the Consulate Health Care in Woodstock.

Mrs. Spencer was born on May 31, 1938, in Charlestown, W.Va. and was the daughter of the late William “Bill” and Margaret Green Pendleton.

She was the wife of the late Theodore “Buster” Spencer.

She is survived by two daughters, Charrie Willis and Phyllis Spencer; two sons Phillip Spencer and Harold Spencer all of Mount Jackson; a sister, Maybell Jackson of Berryville; three brothers Bernard Green of Las Vegas, Nev., William Pendleton of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Roger Pendleton of W.Va.; and four grandchildren, one great-grandchild.

A graveside service was conducted on Wednesday, June 24, at the Riverview Cemetery in Woodstock by the Rev. Louie Shafer.

Funeral arrangements were handled by the Valley Funeral Service in Bowmans Crossing.



Philip David Stillman II

MOUNT JACKSON - Philip David Stillman II, 46, passed away on Thursday, June 11, 2009, at the Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Stillman was born on Dec. 7, 1962, in Ithaca, N.Y., and was the son of Philip David Stillman I, of New York and Betty Jean Clark Howard of Marion, Ind. He had served in the U.S. Army and was a certified welder and a construction worker.

He is survived by his two daughters, Carli and Samantha; two sisters, Jenny L. Spencer of Marion, Ind. and Amy Stillman Dillon of Greenville, Mich.; two half-sisters, Cassie and Carrie; a brother, Charles David Stillman; two nephews, Alexander and David James; a niece, Jennifer; his companion and her daughter, Penny Lloyd and Amanda Green of New Market.

Cremation arrangements were handled by the Theis Funeral Home in New Market.



Earman F. Shif

WOODSTOCK - Earman F. Shifflett, 93, passed away on Saturday, June 20, 2009, at the Consulate Health Care in Woodstock.

Mr. Shifflett was born on Dec. 9, 1915, in Elkton, and was the son of the late Charles and Minnie Holloway Shifflett. He retired as a heavy equipment operator and was a member of the Woodstock United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian V. Shifflett and son-in-law, Stanley Bemis.

He is survived by two daughters, Alice P. Miller and husband, Jack of Woodstock and Judy D. Bemis of Sarasota, Fla.; brother, Max P. “Buddy” Shifflett of Roanoke; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was conducted on Wednesday, June 24, at the Andrew Chapel Cemetery in Vienna with the Reverend John Morris officiating.

Elizabeth Sheetz Smith

MAURERTOWN - Elizabeth Sheetz Smith, 83, passed away on Friday, June 19, 2009, at the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Smith was born on Dec. 24, 1925, in Calvery, and was the daughter of the late Alvin E. and Mamie M. Fadely Sheetz. She was the wife of the late Lewis W. Smith Jr. and was a member of the Liberty Baptist Church in Strasburg. She was a devoted Christian, wife, mother and grandmother. Her passion for life was contagious and you could often find her humming a song. Her heart was full of love for everyone around her. Her laugh and smile will be greatly missed by all.

She is survived by two daughters, Jean L. Miller and husband Steven of Maurertown, Lois A. Smoot of Edinburg; a son Lewis W. Smith III of Columbia, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Pamela J. Fry and husband Chris of Edinburg, Steven Miller Jr. and wife Connie of Lebanon Church, Jennifer Griffith and husband Jesse of Wash., Darrell Smoot Jr., Melissa Rabon, Jason Smith and Jonathan Smith all of Columbia S.C.; six great-grandchildren, Lauren Miller, Justin Miller, Jason Smith Jr., Jada Smith, Haleigh Smoot, Savannah Smith.

A funeral service was conducted on Tuesday, June 23, at the Valley Funeral Chapel in Bowmans Crossing by the Rev. Keith Warren and the Rev. Rob Cypher. Burial was in the Massanutten Cemetery in Woodstock.



Samuel “Sam” Lindamood

EDINBURG - Samuel “Sam” Lindamood, 73, passed away on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at his home after a courageous battle against acute leukemia.

Mr. Lindamood was born on May 23, 1936, in Mount Jackson, and was the son to the late Cletus R. Lindamood and Bertha Ellen Collins Lindamood. He graduated from Triplett High School in 1955. He went to work on the family-owned Clearview Dairy Farm. He loved to bale a good field of hay and chop a load of silage with use of a John Deere tractor. In 1976, he became a part-time deputy sheriff, sworn in by Phil Chrisman. In 1980, he became a full-time law enforcement officer. In a career that spanned 33 years, Sam served as a road deputy and investigator. In 2004, he left the position of Sgt. of Investigations to take a position as bailiff. He always said that he found every phase of his job interesting and fulfilling. 

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Judy M. Polk; a son, Samuel A. Lindamood, Jr. “Lindy” and a granddaughter, Scarlet Dysart of Woodstock; sisters, Dorothy Sager and Betty Dinges, both of Woodstock; brothers, Cletus “Junior” Lindamood of Edinburg and Douglas Lindamood of Trinity, Ala. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Laura May, a sister, Mary Catherine Haun and brothers, Morgan Lindamood, Derwood Lindamood and Troy Lindamood.

Some say that, “the wealth of a man is measured by the number of his friends.” If this is true, Sam Lindamood was a wealthy man indeed. He will be missed for his terrific wit and sense of fair play. 

A memorial service was conducted at the Dellinger Funeral Home in Woodstock on Thursday, June 25, with the Rev. George Bowers officiating. Members of the Shenandoah Lodge number 82, L00F attended as a group.

Karen Roby Morales

TOMS BROOK - Karen Roby Morales, 66, passed away on Friday, June 19, 2009, at her home.

Mrs. Morales was born on Nov. 30, 1942, in French Creek, W.Va., and was the daughter of the late Orville Oliver Roby and Fern Bennett Roby. She was retired from the federal government.

She is survived by her husband John J. Morales of Toms Brook; three sisters: Gwen Lipscomb of Cross Lanes, W.Va., Janet Cosgrove of Ocala, Fla., and Joan Armstrong of Huntington Beach, Calif.; one brother, Richard Roby of Winchester; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was conducted on Tuesday, June 23, at the Maddox Funeral Home by Elder Gary Utz.

Burial was in the Prospect Hill Cemetary.



Catherine Virginia Olinger

Edinburg - Catherine Virginia Olinger, 94, passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2009, at the Consulate Health Care in Woodstock.

Mrs. Olinger was born on Jan. 1, 1915, in New Market, and was the daughter of the late Charlie and Lillie Higes Moton. She was a member of Union Forge United Methodist Church and was retired from Aileen. She was the wife of the late Taft Olinger.

She is survived by her daughter Virginia C. Rhinehart and husband Bobby of Edinburg; a granddaughter Melissa Seal and husband Bill of Woodstock; great-granddaughter Mandy Seal, at home; great-great granddaughter, Miah C. Bowman, at home.

A memorial service was conducted on Tuesday, June 23, at the Valley Funeral Chapel in Bowmans Crossing by Pastor Everett Burner.

Burial was private.

June Astrid Preudhomme

June Astrid Preudhomme, 70, of Luray, died on Sunday, June 21, 2009, at MontVue Nursing Home.

She was born on May 28, 1939, in Port Washington, N.Y., and was a daughter of Astrid Sandell Langford of Farnham and the late Eric T. Langford.

Mrs. Preudhomme owned and operated June’s Place.

Her husband, Leroy Louis Preudhomme, preceded her in death.

Surviving in addition to her mother are a daughter, Bobbi Ann Kurth of Richmond; a son, Kenneth F. Kalbfleisch of Farnham; three stepsons, Donald L. Preudhomme of Gaithers-burg, Md., Bruce R. Preudhomme of Frederick, Md., and Mark A. Preudhomme of Rock-ville, Md.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.



Margaret “Peggy” Stillwill

Margaret “Peggy” Stillwill, 83, of Luray, died on Sunday, June 21, 2009, at Page Memorial Hospital.

She was born on April 23, 1926, in Runnemede, N.J., and was a daughter of the late Frank and Margaret Bowers Marshall.

Mrs. Stillwill worked as a supervisor for Seaman Corp.

On Oct. 30, 1944, she married George Harry Stillwill, who died on July 25, 1993.

She is survived by a son, George Stillwill Jr. of Luray; a daughter, Janice Hasiuk of South Carolina; a brother, John Marshall of Glendora, N.J.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.



Harold “Page” Foltz

Harold “Page” Foltz, 86, of Stanley, died on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at Page Memorial Hospital.

He was born on June 13, 1923, in Shenan-doah and was a son of the late Dewey Lee and Stella Mae Yates Foltz.

Mr. Foltz was employed at Avtex as a millwright for 43 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of the St. Luke Lutheran Church, where he was a deacon and served as financial secretary for 32 years, and was a past member of the Newport-Grove Hill Ruritan Club. He enjoyed farming and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

On Dec. 27, 1952, he married the former Doris Jean Judd, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Greg Foltz of Stanley; a sister, Clair V. Fisher of Stanley; three brothers, Edwin N. and William A. Foltz, both of Luray, and Aubrey D. Foltz of Stanley; and Greg’s fiancee, Darlene Anderson of Stanley. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeanne Anne Foltz; a brother, Dewey Lee Foltz Jr.; and a sister, Anna Mae Cullers.

A funeral service was conducted on Friday, June 19, at the St. Luke Lutheran Church by the Rev. Mark Briehl. Burial was in the Beahm’s Chapel Cemetery in Luray with military honors by the American Legion Post 22.

Glenn Ray Wright Jr.

Glenn Ray Wright Jr., 57, of 4809 Grove Hill River Rd., Shenandoah, died on Saturday, June 20, 2009.

He was born on Oct. 5, 1951, in Warrenton and was a son of the late Glenn Ray Wright Sr. and Julia Mae Clark Wright.

Mr. Wright owned and operated Valley Auto Sales for 20 years and attended the Antioch Independent Bible Church.

On Jan. 1, 1971, he married the former Donna Sue Mullins, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Bruce Lowell Wright and wife Dena Wright of Shenandoah, and Matt Dwayne Wright and wife Trisha Wright of Luray; a brother, Lee Wright of Stanley; and five grandchildren, Destiny and Lindsey of Shenandoah, and Aaron, Emilee and Courtney of Luray.

A funeral service was conducted on Tuesday, June 23, at the Bradley Funeral Home by Pastor Frank Painter and the Rev. Lester Horton. Burial was in the Mullins Family Cemetery in Shenandoah.

Elva Susan Lohr

Elva Susan Lohr, 95, of 410 E. Main St., Luray, died on Friday, June 19, 2009, at Winchester Medical Center.

She was born on June 22, 1913, in Luray and was a daughter of the late John William and Elizabeth Susan Painter Burner.

Mrs. Lohr was a past member of the Luray Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the Luray VFW Post 621 Ladies Auxiliary.

On Aug. 10, 1945, she married Elbert Gorrell “Shorty” Lohr, who died on Sept. 21, 1971.

She is survived by three sons, Donald Goode, Alvin “Hoot” Bell and James “Tater” Clark, all of Luray; four daughters, Sue Housden, Ann Sours, Brenda Clark and Patty Clark, all of Luray; a daughter-in-law, Chris Goode of Luray; 20 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, William V. “Jack” Goode and Buford Bell; five brothers, Joseph, John, Willis, Harry   and James “Buck” Burner; and two sisters, Annie Bauser-man and Edna Clark.

A funeral service was conducted on Monday, June 22, at the Bradley Funeral Home by Garland “Bubba” Gochenour. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Luray.

Virginia Susan Jenkins

Mrs. Virginia Susan Jenkins, 60, of 191 Ridge Pole Rd., Stanley, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at her residence.

A daughter of the late Phyllis Virginia Burner, she was born December 26, 1948, in Luray. She was raised in the home of her maternal grandparents, the late Rufus D. and Etta M. Rothgeb Burner.

On March 9, 1968, she married Willard D. Jenkins, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Angela Nedd of College Park, Md.; and Sharon Jenkins of Stanley, Va.; and two grandchildren, Tristen and Tyler Bull of Stanley.

As were her wishes, her body was cremated.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Stanley Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 126 Stanley, Va. 22851; or to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 West Cork Street, Suite 405, Winchester, Va. 22601.

Arrangements were handled by the Lindsey-Kyger Funeral Home in Shenandoah.

Charles Thomas McClary

Charles Thomas McClary, 75, of 20273 Red Rose Dr., Sterling, died on Friday, June 19, 2009, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Leesburg.

He was born on July 21, 1933, in Louisa and was a son of the late Irvin McClary and Vallie Mae Jewell McClary Sherwood.

Mr. McClary worked in maintenance for Fairfax City. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

On Oct. 24, 1959, he married the former Ann Rothgeb, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son-in-law, Garland Horn-baker; a sister, Barbara Jean Pettit of Luray; and three grandchildren, Brett, Danielle and Brianna Horn-baker. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia McClary Hornbaker; a brother, Marvin McClary; and his stepfather, Lester Sherwood.

A funeral service was conducted on Monday, June 22, at the Bradley Funeral Home by the Rev. Lewis Schwebius. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Luray. (Paid Obituary)



Catherine Louise Buracker

Catherine Louise Buracker, 81, of Staunton, died  on  Friday,  June  19, 2009.

She was born on Feb. 2, 1928, in Luray and was a daughter of the late Rube and Lucy Jane Buracker.

Mrs. Buracker worked in the housekeeping department at Page Memorial Hospital for 23 years.

On July 5, 1944, she married Morris Alfred Buracker, who died on March 29, 1987.

She is survived by three sons, Robert Alfred Buracker of Madison, Larry Wayne Buracker of Bentonville, and Terry Fitzgerald Buracker of Luray; six daughters, Mary Catherine Burner of Luray, JoAnn Nuckols, Betty Lou Turner, Anna May Gray and Bonnie Buracker, all of Staunton, and Barbara Jean Knupp of Harrisonburg; a sister, Marie Kaminski of Stanley; 24 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Johnny and Benjamin Loring Aleshire.

A funeral service was conducted on Monday, June 22, at the Mount Zion Church of the Brethren by the Rev. James Kite. Burial was in the Mount Zion Cemetery.



Pauline Sherfey

Pauline Sherfey, 86, of Stanley, died on Tuesday, June 23, 2009. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Bradley Funeral Home.



Shirley Hickey

WOODSTOCK - Shirley Hickey, passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock.

Mrs. Hickey was born in Georgetown, N.J., and was the daughter of Anna Seaman Cobb of Columbus, N.J. and the late Alvin T. Cobb. She was a member of St. John Bosco Roman Catholic Church and Woodstock Moose Lodge.

She is survived by her husband, John Hickey; two brothers, Francis Cobb and John Cobb both of Pa. and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral mass was held on Monday, June 22, at the St. John Bosco Roman Catholic Church in Woodstock.

Burial was in the Sunset View Memorial Gardens in Woodstock.



Macy Elizabeth Samuels

Macy Elizabeth Samuels, 86, of Elkton, died on Thursday, June 18, 2009, at her son’s home in Lexington.

She was born on May 12, 1923, in Page County and was a daughter of the late Euell G. and Nettie J. Lam Breeden.

Mrs. Samuels worked as a seamstress at Blue Bell for 35 years until her retirement. She was an avid gardener.

She is survived by a son, Sheldon Breeden of Lexington; two brothers, Cecil and Herman Breeden; one sister, Tressie Hensley; one stepsister, Dara Inez Grimsley; one grandson; three step grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Homer and Nelson Breeden.

A funeral service was conducted on Sunday, June 21, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton by Pastor Nona Allen. Burial was in the Hensley UMC Cemetery.
