Jerry H. Carr
Jerry H. Carr, 61, of New Market, died on Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, at his home after a brief battle with cancer.
He was born on Oct. 6, 1948, and was a son of the late Wendell and Goldie Polk Carr. He was raised by his late uncle, Alvin Polk, and wife Laura, who survives.
Upon graduation from Stonewall Jackson High School Class of 1968, Mr. Carr enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and retired in 1989 as staff sergeant. He also graduated from Beaufort Tech as an auto mechanic specialist while living and serving in the military in South Carolina. He was employed by Steven Toyota of Harrisonburg.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Pong Carr, are two sisters, Carolyn Baker of Woodstock, and Sharon Bly of Maurertown; and a brother, Jody Carr of Luray.
A graveside service was conducted on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the Conicville Cemetery by Pastor Dave M. Casto, with military honors by the Strasburg American Legion Post 77 Honor Guard.

Yvonne Blanche Strickler
Yvonne Blanche Strickler, 69, of Elkton, died on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, at her home.
She was born on Feb. 29, 1940, in the Jollett area of Elkton and was a daughter of the late Bennie E. and Viola Lam Meadows.
Mrs. Strickler attended the Jollett school and Shenandoah High School. She was a homemaker and had previously been employed with Sancar Corporation and Dollar General.
On May 8, 1959, she married Freddie W. Strickler, who survives.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Debbie D. Strickler of Elkton; a brother, Sheldon Meadows of Elkton; a sister, Maxine Dove of Elkton; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilton and Page Meadows.
A funeral service was conducted on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton by Pastor Wayne Wright. Burial was in the Mount Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville.

Janet Yvonne Alger
Janet Yvonne Alger, 66, of Luray, died on Monday, Nov. 9, 2009.
She was born on Aug. 15, 1943, in Stanardsville and was a daughter of the late James Parker Thomas and Annie Frances Painter Kline.
Mrs. Alger worked as an assembler for the Genie Company in Shenandoah.
On Feb. 18, 1989, she married Robert L. “Babe” Alger, who survives.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Carol Ann Cubbage and Deborah Yvonne Comer, both of Luray; a sister, Mary Rothgeb of Luray; a brother, Delman A. Thomas of Stanley; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Mitchell Kline Jr.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Bradley Funeral Home by Pastor Frank Painter. Burial will be in the Beahm’s Chapel Cemetery in Luray.
The family was to receive friends from 7-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the funeral home. |

Bryna Lee Hickerson Burner
Bryna Lee Hickerson Burner, 71, died on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at the Oakcrest Retirement Community in Baltimore, Md.
She was born on March 9, 1938, in Texas and was a daughter of the late Curtis Bryan and Golda Lee Hickerson.
Mrs. Burner moved with her family to Luray in 1953. Following marriage, she resided in Falls Church.
In 1957, she married Raynard G. “R.G.” Burner, who died in 1995.
She is survived by a son, Curt Burner of Port Orange Fla.; a daughter, Carla Burner Simon of Perry Hall, Md.; a sister, Beth Hickerson Weidner of Newport News; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service and reception will be held at the Oak Crest Retirement Community Chapel, 8820 Walther Blvd., Baltimore, Md., at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14.
Burial will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 10, at the Arlington National Cemetery.

Bobby Lee Petefish
Bobby Lee Petefish, 83, of Luray, died on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at MontVue Nursing Home.
He was born on April 21, 1926, in Stanley and was a son of the late Conard Dewey and Thelma Ruth Painter Petefish.
Mr. Petefish had worked as a forklift operator for Avtex.
On March 31, 1943, he married the former Ruth Maxine Alger, who died on Dec. 9, 2007.
He is survived by three daughters, Lana M. Hoak and Lois A. Short, both of Luray, and Susan Jane Dovel of Stanley; two brothers, Melvin Earl Petefish of Ohio, and Douglas Bruce Petefish of Stanley; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dennis W. and Conard Petefish Jr.
A funeral service was conducted on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the Lighthouse Gospel Church by Evangelist Earl E. Painter, the Rev. Eric Croft and the Rev. Hal Sonafrank. Burial was in the Newport Cemetery. |

Frank Webster Rose,
Frank Webster Rose, 80, of Massanutten, died on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at his home.
He was born on May 11, 1929, in Haverstraw, N.Y., and was a son of the late Frank W. and Katherine King Rose.
Mr. Rose graduated from Congers High School in Congers, N.Y, and owned and operated a construction business in several states. After moving to Massanutten, he worked in sales at Great Eastern Resorts.
He is survived by a daughter, Wendy D’Auria of Luray; a son, Frank W. Rose of Florida; a companion of 60 years, Peggy Zak; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Rose.
At his request, there was no service. Following cremation, burial was at Mount Repose in Haverstraw, N.Y.

Glenn E. Davis
Glenn E. Davis, 62, of Sunbury, Pa., died on Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville Pa., after a battle with leukemia.
He was born on Sept. 21, 1947, in Shenandoah and was a son of Cerretha Comer Davis and the late Orvin O. Davis Jr.
A graduate of James Madison University, Mr. Davis was a veteran of the Vietnam War and served five years in the U.S. Air Force. In 2000, he retired from the Federal Bureau of Prisons and was an avid traveler.
Surviving in addition to his mother and his wife, Fran Davis, are three children, Sara, Katherine and Megan; two stepdaughters; a sister, Barbara Shifflet; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton by the Rev. Stephen Creech.

Billy Joseph Phillips
Billy Joseph Phillips, 75, of 89 Yagers Rd., Luray, died on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at Page Memorial Hospital.
He was born on Aug. 25, 1934, in Woodstock and was a son of the late Liggett William and Annie Mae Higgs Phillips.
Mr. Phillips operated Yager Farm for more than 50 years and the B.W. Mauck Farm for more than 25 years. He was a member of the Luray Church of the Brethren and the Page County Farmers Association.
On March 2, 1956, he married the former Norma Lee Ponn, who survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Sue Ann Moyer and husband David Moyer of Luray; two sisters, Doris Griffith of Luray, and Frances Hilliard of Pasadena, Md.; a brother, Winston Phillips of Luray; two step granddaughters; and two step great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by a son, John William Phillips; and a brother, Leroy Jackson Phillips.
A funeral service was conducted on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the Bradley Funeral Home by the Rev. Chester Knighting and Pastor John Thomas. Burial was in the Beahm’s Chapel Cemetery in Luray.

Stanley T. Clem
Stanley T. Clem, 82, of Redlands, Calif., died on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009.
He was born on June 3, 1927, in Fort Valley and was a son of the late Tobias and Maggie Clem.
Mr. Clem had resided in Shenandoah before moving to California.
He is survived by two daughters, Sandra Tarr and Amy Clem, both of Redlands, Calif.; two brothers, Billy Clem of Charlottesville, and Lesley Clem of Shenandoah; and one sister, Mary Jane Welch of Stephens City.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Fort Valley. |

Juanita Severna Pinkett
On Wednesday, November 11, 2009, Juanita S. Pinkett, beloved daughter of Isaiah and Madge Pinkett, beloved sister of Isaiah and Laura Jayne (all of whom preceded her in death), and beloved mother of Wanda Scott-Jamison (Andrew), departed this life peacefully.
She also leaves to cherish her memory, her sister-in-law, Maggie Pinkett; four nephews, Louis Tutt (Angie), Gerald Haynes (Troy), Michael Pinkett (Lezlie), and Allen Pinkett (Carol); two neices, Carolyn Pinkett Bush (William) and Pamela Haynes Poles (Carlton); and a host of other relatives and friends.
Family was to receive friends on Wednesday, November 18, at 10 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m. at Contee AME Zion Church, 903 Division Avenue, NE Washington, DC 20019. The Rev. Dr. Darrell Gaskin, minister. Interment Fort Lincoln Cemetery.

Journey Alan “Buster” Cubbage Sr.
Journey Alan “Buster” Cubbage Sr., 67, of Stanley, died on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
He was born on Jan. 19, 1942, in Stanley and was a son of Lucille Campbell Cubbage of Stanley and the late Freeman Ernest Cubbage.
On April 16, 1967, he married the former Nancy J. Dallas, who survives.
Surviving in addition to his mother and wife are a son, Journey Alan “Billy” Cubbage Jr. of Stanley; a brother, Freeman Ernest Cubbage Jr. of Stanley; and three sisters, Louise Mongold of Elkton, and Elaine Comer and Dianne Lowe, both of Stanley. He was preceded in death by a sister, Maxine Ann Cubbage.
A funeral service was conducted on Monday, Nov. 16, at the Lighthouse Tabernacle Church in New Market by the Rev. Charles Clinedinst. Burial was in the Mount Zion Cemetery in Luray. |

John Jacob Mueller
John Jacob Mueller, 37, died on Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, in Arlington.
Mr. Mueller was a son of Gayle Mueller and the late John Robert Mueller.
Surviving in addition to his mother are a brother, Matthew Mueller.
A graveside service was conducted on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at the Arnon Cemetery, 646 Walker Rd., Great Falls.

Ile Alana Troutman Lambert
Ile Alana Troutman Lambert, 64, of Harrisonburg, died on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
She was born on March 26, 1945, in Allegany County, Md., and was a daughter of the late William and Agile Day Troutman.
Mrs. Lambert worked for Tyson Foods for 25 years, holding multiple positions. She was a member of the Ray of Hope Pentecostal Church in Harrisonburg, where she sang in the choir. She was an avid cook.
On Aug. 10, 1963, she married James Lambert, who survives.
Surviving in addition to her husband are three sons, Jimmy Lambert of Stanley, Billy Lambert of Timberville, and Jerry Lambert of Grottoes; a daughter, Lisa Goditt of Harrisonburg; two brothers, William Troutman Jr. of Broadway, and Freddy Troutman of Mount Clinton; one sister, Bonnie Miller of Harrisonburg; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at the Ray of Hope Pentecostal Church in Harrisonburg by the Rev. Jimmy Kite. Burial was in the Singers Glen Cemetery.

Charlotte Kite Snow
Charlotte Kite Snow, 83, of Shenandoah, died on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, at MontVue Nursing Home.
She was born on Dec. 13, 1925, in Page County and was a daughter of the late David A. and Iva Allene Comer Kite.
Mrs. Snow lived the majority of her life in Shenandoah. She was a homemaker and worked in the restaurant at the Shenandoah VFW. She was a member of the Avis O. Comer VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Mount Lebanon Congregational Christian Church.
Her husband, Wilford Snow, preceded her in death.
She is survived by a sister, Lois Ann Freeze of Stanley; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Vivian Beaghan; and a brother, Grover Page Kite.
A graveside service was conducted on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Mount Lebanon Cemetery by the Rev. Hudson Nuckols.

Russell Franklin Bailey
Russell Franklin Bailey, 83, formerly of Stanley, died on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, in Bentonville at the home of his daughter, with whom he resided. He died after a brief battle with lung cancer.
Russell grew up on Tanners Ridge, outside of Stanley, the second son of the late Grover Cleveland Bailey and Hattie Jenkins Bailey. He was a member of the All Saints Episcopal Church.
Russell was a veteran of World War II. He served with distinction as an Army Ranger in WWII with the 101st Airborne during the Ardennes Campaign aiding with the defense of Bastogne in what became known as the Battle of the Bulge. For his courageous actions in Bastogne, Russell was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor. He was later wounded for which he received the Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge.
Russell worked as an engineer for Washington House and the Hermitage, both located in Alexandra. He returned to Luray as a manager of Big Meadows Lodge for Aramark Corporation. As a child, he enjoyed hunting as time permitted. As he grew older, he became an avid and accomplished golfer and was a member of the Caverns Country Club.
Mr. Bailey is survived by a daughter, Debra Lynn Bailey; and four grandsons, Joseph Howard Bailey, Matthew Russell Bailey, Colton Roger Bailey and C. Robin Bailey. He also leaves behind two sisters, Ethel and Velva Good, both of Stanley; and two bothers, Claude Bailey of Luray, and G. Calvin Bailey of Oxon Hill, Md. He was preceded in death by another brother, Robert N. Bailey, who died Feb. 6, 1998.
A funeral service was conducted on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Bradley Funeral Home by Pastor Frank Good Jr. He was interred in a family plot in the Jenkins Cemetery on Tanners Ridge, with military honors by the VFW Comer-Jones Post 621.

James Walter Knott
James Walter Knott, 72, of Luray, died on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009.
He was born on July 25, 1937, in Stanley and was a son of the late Walter N. and Daisy Frances Judd Knott.
Mr. Knott was a member of the Rocky Branch Regular Baptist Church. He worked as a truck driver for the town of Luray for 20 years.
On Aug. 17, 1957, he married the former Laura Mae Shenk, who died on Nov. 14, 2008.
He is survived by two sons, James Walter Knott Jr. of Harrisonburg, and Ray Lynn Knott of Luray; a sister, Edith M. Phillips of Front Royal; two brothers, Gary F. and Kenneth H. Knott, both of Luray; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Joe Clyde Knott; three brothers, Carroll, Lewis and Melvin Lynwood Knott; and two sisters, Vivian F. Richards and Jane Lee Knott.
A graveside service was conducted on Friday, Nov. 13, at the Beahm’s Chapel Cemetery by Pastor Joseph “Jodie” Hendricks. Burial was in the Beahm’s Chapel Cemetery in Luray.
