OBITUARIES

Stanley Berterum Toth

Stanley Berterum Toth, 76, of Luray, died on Friday, May 2, 2008, at MontVue Nursing Home, where he had lived for the last eight months.

He was born on April 23, 1932, in Arlington and was a son of the late Andrew Paul and Amanda Campbell Toth.

Mr. Toth served in the National Guard and the U.S. Navy in the mid-1950s for seven years.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Margaret Henrietta Jenkins Toth, are a daughter, Sharon Williams of Virginia; a stepson, Thomas D. Minke of Luray; two stepdaughters, Sharon L. Mazza and Deborah J. Minke, both of Fredericksburg; a brother, Andrew P. Toth III of Luray; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Josephine M. Morton and Elizabeth A. Jones.

A graveside service was conducted on Wednesday, May 7, at the Beahm’s Chapel Cemetery in Luray by Pastor Frank Painter with military honors by the VFW Comer-Jones Post 621.



Harold Douglas Johnson

Harold Douglas Johnson, 89, of Luray, died on Thursday, May 1, 2008, at MontVue Nursing Home.

He was born on June 11, 1918, in Marion, Ky., and was a son of the late Leonard and Josephine Gray Johnson.

Mr. Johnson retired from the U.S. Army, having served in World War II and Korea, after more than 20 years. He worked for six years as a manager at Luray Caverns Restaurant.

On June 20, 1942, he married the former Jean H. Harris, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Judy Carol Johnson of Luray.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.



Cubbage addition

Bobbie O’Neil Cubbage, 79, of Stanley, who died on Friday, April 25, 2008, was preceded in death by brother Simon Cubbage. Mr. Cubbage’s full obituary was printed in the May 1 edition of the Page News and Courier.



Lawrence Reynolds Wilkins

Lawrence Reynolds Wilkins, 84, of  Mathias,  W.Va.,  died  on Friday, May 2, 2008, at  his home.

He was born on April 15, 1924, in Hardy County and was a son of the late John and Hannah See Wilkins.

Mr. Wilkins was a farmer and a member of the Mathias Church of the Brethren.

On March 11, 1945, he married the former Velma Sager, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Betty Lee Wilkins of Shenandoah, and Thelma Barb of Mathias, W.Va.; a son, Kenneth Wilkins of Mathias, W.Va.; two brothers, Delbert Wilkins of Mathias, W.Va., and Paul Wilkins of Lost City, W.Va.; two sisters, Audrey Fitzwater of Mathias, W.Va., and Deloris Link of Arkansas, W.Va.; five grandchildren; and 11 great- grandchildren.

A funeral service was conducted on Tuesday, May 6, at the Mathias Church of the Brethren. Burial was in the Wilkins family cemetery in Mathias.

Memorial contributions may be to the Mathias-Baker Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 89, Mathias, W.Va. 26812; or to the Potomac Highlands Animal Rescue, P.O. Box 27 AA, Mathias, W.Va.

Glenn Wellington Dobbs

Mr. Glenn Wellington Dobbs died Sunday, May 4, 2008, at Fitzgerald Health Care at Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Center.

He was born June 12, 1918, in Shenandoah, Virginia, to Kirby Glennwood and Nell Strickler Dobbs.

He graduated from Shenandoah High School and the University of Virginia. He served 2-1/2 years as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II, with time at Camp Lee, Virginia, and in Alaska. He was employed for 39 years by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company; and after retirement from Reynolds, he worked two years for Goody’s Manufacturing Company. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and Forsyth Country Club.

Mr. Dobbs is survived by his wife, Catherine Judy Dobbs; a daughter, Judy Dobbs Condlin and husband Robert, of Baltimore, Md.; a son, Charles Edward Dobbs and wife Elly, of Atlanta, Ga.; and five grandchildren, Christopher Condlin of Palo Alto, Calif., Emily Condlin of Washington, D.C., Palmer Dobbs of Charlotte, N.C., Peyten and Whitney Dobbs of Atlanta, Ga.

The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jack Yarbrough officiating. The family will receive friends after the service. Interment will be in the Graves Chapel Church Cemetery in Stanley, Virginia, on Friday, May 9, at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 W. 5th Street, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101; Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Center, 1240 Arbor Road, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27104; or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the caring nurses at the Fitzgerald Health Care Center and to his loving nurse, Ellen Brady.

Mildred Louise Cubbage

Mildred Louise Cubbage, 64, of Luray, died on Sunday, May 4, 2008, in Luray.

She was born on March 17, 1944, in Charles Town, W.Va., and was a daughter of Laura Elizabeth Newman Washington and the late Herman Jackson and stepdaughter of the late George Washington.

Mrs. Cubbage was a stock person at Wal-Mart for four years and was a member of the St. John’s Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her mother and her husband, William Henry Cubbage Sr., are two sons, William Henry Cubbage Jr. of Luray, and Reggie Antonio Cubbage of Seaford, Del.; and four grandchildren.

A funeral service was conducted on Wednesday, May 7, at the Bradley Funeral Home. Burial was in the Mount Sinai Cemetery in Elkton.



James Norman McAlister

James Norman McAlister, 71, of Stanley, died on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, in Stanley.

He was born on July 25, 1936, in Shenandoah and was a son of the late Harold N. and Freda Good McAlister.

Mr. McAlister was a veteran of the U.S. Army and had worked as an auto mechanic for Reed’s Tire Center for 25 years.

On Dec. 23, 1961, he married the former Shirley E. Royer, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Teresa M. Spain of Stanley; three sisters, Arlene McLean of Lenoir, N.C., Gail Comer of Elkton, and Blanche Comer of Shenandoah; three brothers, Willie, Millard and Joe McAlister, all of Shenandoah; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances McAlister and Ruth McAlister; and three brothers, John, Samuel and Arthur McAlister.

A funeral service was conducted on Saturday, May 3, at the Fellowship Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Sherfey. Burial was in the Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Shenandoah.



Marilyn Earman Thayer

Marilyn Earman Thayer, 57, of Virginia Beach, died on Sunday, April 27, 2008, at her home.

She was born in Harrisonburg and was a daughter of Jane Kaylor Evans of Virginia Beach the late Charles E. Earman Jr.

Mrs. Thayer was a graduate of Lake Taylor High School and attended Radford University, formerly Radford College, and Virginia Wesleyan College. She had worked as a secretary at Kaufman Brothers Brokerage Firm and then went on to be an executive secretary at Tidewater Virginia Development Council.

Surviving in addition to her mother and her husband, Royal Cranford Thayer Jr. are her stepfather, J. Norwood Evans of Virginia Beach; a son, Jamie Voorhies of Silver Spring, Md.; a daughter, Ann Kaylor Voorhies of Virginia Beach; two stepdaughters, Sara Thayer Popovich of Suffolk, and Mary Thayer Gale of Chesterfield; a sister, Ann Earman Greeder of Virginia Beach; a brother, Charles E. Earman III of Shenandoah; two grandsons; a niece and nephew.

A memorial service was conducted on Friday, May 2, at the Virginia Beach United Methodist Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Make a Wish Foundation.



Pearl Marie Wyant Hensley

Pearl Marie Wyant Hensley, 86, of Elkton, died on Sunday, April 27, 2008, at her home.

She was born on Aug. 20, 1921, in Rockingham County, near Elkton, and was a daughter of the late Franklin Pierce and Gussie Marie Hensley Wyant.

Mrs. Hensley was a homemaker and had worked briefly at Forbert Corporation in McGaheysville, Blue Bell Inc. in Shenandoah and the Dollar General Store in Elkton. She was a member of the Blue Ridge Independent Church in Elkton, where she taught the adult Sunday school class.

On Dec. 24, 1936, she married Willard Hiram Hensley, who died on Dec. 5, 1987.

She is survived by two daughters, Shelby Hensley Ruth of Carson City, Nev., and Caroll Hensley Schmidt of Elkton; two sons, Delure W. Hensley of Elkton, and Garland W. Hensley of McGaheysville; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was conducted on Saturday, May 3, at the Blue Ridge Independent Church in Elkton by Pastor Brad Lewis and Pastor Gerald Meeks. Burial was in the Edward Hensley family cemetery in Mount Pleasant, near Elkton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Blue Ridge Independent Church Building Fund, 38 Independent Road, Elkton, Va. 22827; or to the Elkton Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 152, Elkton.

Dewey Lee Foltz Jr.

Dewey Lee Foltz Jr., 81, of Shenandoah, died on Friday, May 2, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

He was born on May 1, 1927, in Stanley, and was  a  son  of  the late  Dewey Lee and Estella Mae Yates Foltz.

Mr. Foltz was a Navy veteran, having served during World War II, and was a member of the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.

On Aug. 19, 1948, he married the former June Elizabeth Karnes, who has resided at the Life Care Center in New Market for the past year and a half. Mr. Foltz had lived with her for the past two months.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Barbara Shoemaker of Singers Glen; four brothers, Edwin N. and William A. Foltz, both of Luray, and Aubrey D. and H. Page Foltz, both of Stanley; and a sister, Clair V. Fisher of Stanley. He was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Mae Cullers.

A funeral service was conducted on Tuesday, May 6, at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church by the Rev. Patricia K. Covington and the Rev. Mark Briehl. Burial was in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shenandoah Volunteer Rescue Squad, U.S. 340, Shenandoah, Va. 22849; or to the Life Care Center, 315 E. Lee Highway, New Market, Va. 22844.
