Elna Margarete Harling
Elna Margarete Harling, 85, of Luray, died on Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at MontVue Nursing Home.
She was born on Feb. 25, 1925, in Luray and was a daughter of the late Cletus Arthur and Alice Elizabeth Payne Cave.
Mrs. Harling worked as a seamstress at Wrangler and was a member of the Mount Zion Church of the Brethren and the Ida Grove Gospel Church.
On June 5, 1976, she married William R. Harling, who died on Jan. 18, 2004.
She is survived by three sons, Thomas C., Donald L. and Roger M. Somers, all of Luray; a stepson, Charles Harling of Jacksonville, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Patricia Ann “Patty” Martin of Hawaii; a sister, Marlene Bell of Luray; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Carson and Joyce Cave; and a brother, Charles Cave.
A funeral service was conducted on Friday, March 5, at the Mount Zion Church of the Brethren by the Rev. Quentin Parlett. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Dennis Keith Redmon
Dennis Keith Redmon, 55, of Front Royal, died on Monday, March 8, 2010, at Winchester Medical Center.
He was born on March 31, 1954, in Pittsburgh, Pa., and was a son of Irvin W. Redmon Jr. and Rubie L. Redmon of Spring Hill, Fla.
Mr. Redmon was a manager at Martins in Front Royal.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his fiancee, Jane Estes; three brothers, John Redmon of Stanley, Irvin W. Redmon III, of Warrenton, and Sgt. Michael Redmon of Ft. Stewart, Ga.; and three sisters, Brenda Lee Garriott of Concord, N.C., Teri Shafer of Binghamton, N.Y., and Myra Bower of Nokesville.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 11, at the Maddox Funeral Home by Pastor Mike Woods. Burial will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
The family was to receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, March 10, at the funeral home.

Mary Catherine Rickard
Mary Catherine Rickard, 90, of 1243 Rileyville, Rd., Rileyville, died on Friday, March 5, 2010, at MontVue Nursing Home.
She was born on March 28, 1919, in Rileyville and was a daughter of the late John William and Lona Bell Gordon Deavers.
Mrs. Rickard was a member of the Rileyville Church of the Brethren. She worked as a machine operator at the Luray Textile for 30 years.
On Jan. 12, 1946, she married Carl Wesley Rickard, who died on March 22, 2006.
She is the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by a foster daughter, Kris Weaver of Rileyville and husband Stuart Weaver; a grandson, Austin Weaver; and two nieces, Doris Smelser of Pennsylvania, and Helen Thompson of Front Royal. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Edgar, Elmer, Cletus, Clarence and Eugene Deavers; and a niece, Dean Housden.
A funeral service was conducted on Monday, March 8, at the Rileyville Church of the Brethren by the Rev. Eric Croft and the Rev. Kenneth Graff. Burial was in the Rileyville Cemetery.

Marie M. Spitler
Marie M. Spitler, 91, of Luray, died on Monday, March 1, 2010, at Page Memorial Hospital.
She was born on Feb. 6, 1919, in Stanley and was a daughter of the late Charles L. and Ettie Coffman Dovel.
Mrs. Spitler had worked as a supervisor at Wrangler for 25 years, retiring in 1980. She was a member of the Mount Zion Church of the Brethren and was an avid gardener.
On May 15, 1938, she married Charles N. Spitler, who survives.
Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters, Patricia S. Painter and Susan S. Campbell, both of Luray, and Janet S. Hatcher of Staunton; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was conducted on Thursday, March 4, at the Mount Zion Church of the Brethren by Pastor Gary Major and Cecil Haycock. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Carlton Leo Good
Carlton Leo Good of Stanley, Va., age 70, beloved husband to Nancy Linda Good, quietly passed away on March 1, 2010, at the Winchester Medical Center.
Born January 16, 1940, in Stanley, Va., Carlton was the son of a preacher, as well as an avid follower of Christ. He joined the Marine Corps in 1957 and served our country in Beirut Lebanon. After his dedication of service in the Marines, he became a builder constructing custom homes across the Tri-States of Virginia, Maryland and D.C. Whether he was on a commercial site, restoring castles, developing land or building custom homes, he was a very hard worker and took pride in every job he completed. His favorite pastimes throughout his life were auto racing, horses, fishing and most recently flying his PPC.
In retirement, Carlton settled back in his hometown and became a certified basic flight instructor for Powered Para Wing Aircraft. Weather permitting, he powered up his aircraft and explored all the beauty the Shenandoah Valley has to offer. He also spent many summers at the Fellowship Baptist Church aiding in Vacation Bible School and was also a member of the Rileyville Baptist Church.
Carlton was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Leo Good and Emma Mae Good, both of Stanley, Va.
As well as a beloved husband to his wife, Nancy Good, he was a devoted father to his children, Jeff Good of Rixeyville, Va., Angie Good-Broy of Stanley, Va., Jowanna Wharton of Waynesboro, Va., Justin Peck of Culpeper, Va., and Vanessa Hitt of Stanley, Va. He was preceded in death by two of his children, son Gregory Good and daughter Teresa Good. Carlton also left his legacy within his grandchildren, Daniel Widdowfield, Richard Widdowfield, Jodi Morris, Tammy Knot, Carlton Edward Good, Austin Peck, Nicole Hitt, Alyssa Peck, Lauren Hitt, Clayton Peck and Emma Hitt, along with five great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his sisters, Geneva Cubbage of Alexandria, Va., Janice McDaniel of Richmond, Va., and Betty Orye of Chesterfield, Va.; and a brother, Lewis Good of Stanley, Va.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, March 13, at 2 p.m. at the Rileyville Baptist Church, located at 7044 U.S. Hwy. 340 North, Rileyville, Va. 22650.

Ellen Gertrude Thomas
Ellen Gertrude Thomas, 69, of Luray, died on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
She was born on Feb. 16, 1941, in Stanley and was a daughter of the late Hiram Tasel and Thelma Lee Campbell.
Mrs. Thomas had worked at Avtex and was a member of the Luray Pentecostal Church.
On June 3, 1976, she married Walter Lee Thomas, who died on Dec. 14, 1994.
She is survived by four sons, Billy Lam, Eddie Lam, Ricky Riner and David Woodward, all of Luray; a daughter, Peggy Jewell of Luray; four sisters, Agnes McCoy and Diana Long, both of Stanley, Audrey Herring of Front Royal, and Sylvia Shifflett of Bridgewater; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Campbell; and a brother, Hiram Campbell Jr.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 11, at the Luray Pentecostal Church by the Rev. Albert A. Kling, the Rev. Jack Campbell and the Rev. Tony Cubbage. Burial will be in the Sandy Glaze Cemetery in Stanley.

John Richard Deely
John Richard Deely, 75, of Luray, died on Monday, March 1, 2010, at Page Memorial Hospital.
He was born on Aug. 5, 1934, in Philadelphia, Pa., and was a son of the late Joseph Thomas Deely Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Leddy Deely.
Mr. Deely was an Army veteran and worked for the United States Army for 28 years as an office manager. He was a member of the Battlefield Baptist Church.
Mr. Deely lived in Washington, D.C., from 1969-1973 and from 1976-1983, before retiring and moving to Page County.
On June 5, 1958, he married the former Lois Roehr Harding, who survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife are four sons, John R. “Sean” Deely Jr. of Bala Cynwyd, Pa., Timmothy P. Deely of Centreville, Colin M. Deely of Sterling, and Brendan J. Deely of Chicago, Ill.; two daughters, Mary D. Babione of Acworth, Ga., and Megan P. Deely of Bala Cynwyd, Pa.; two brothers, Thomas Deely III of Philadelphia, Pa., and Edward J. Deely of Florida; and 19 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by grandchild.
A mass was conducted on Saturday, March 6, at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church by Fr. Christopher Lemme.
Burial will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18, at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

Nelson Hunter Sours
Nelson Hunter Sours, 87, of Rileyville, died on Monday, March 1, 2010, at Warren Memorial Hospital.
He was born on Dec. 9, 1922, in Rileyville and was a son of the late James Lester and Nellie Mae Strickler Sours.
Mr. Sours was an Army veteran, having served during World War II, and worked for the U.S. Air Force as a mechanic. He had resided in Washington, D.C., for more than 50 years before moving to Luray in 1990. He was a member of the American Legion Post 22 and VFW Comer-Jones Post 621.
On Feb. 26, 1944, he married the former Janet Madolin Spitler, who survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Duane Hunter Sours of Merry Hill, N.C.; one brother, Gary Sours of Luray; a sister, Linda Updike of Pratts; and one grandchild. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Raymond Sola, Maurice M., Leonard M. and Oscar T. Sours; and five sisters, Maude Bennett, Nora C. Smeltzer, Elinor Weatherman, Mildred Carter and Alice J. Clark.
A funeral service was conducted on Friday, March 5, at the Page United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ralph H. Crabill. Burial was in the Beahm’s Chapel Cemetery with military honors by the VFW Comer-Jones Post 621.

Norma Jean Dinges
Norma Jean Dinges, 62, of Luray, died on Tuesday, March 2, 2010.
She was born on Sept. 22, 1947, in Luray and was a daughter of the late Edward Russell and Lillie Pearl Miller Sours.
Mrs. Dinges was a member of the Beahm’s Chapel Church.
On July 23, 1967, she married Jimmy Lee Dinges, who survives.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Rodney McKinley and Jamie Lee Dinges, both of Luray; two brothers, Bobby Russell and Carroll Benton Sours, both of Luray; two sisters, June Dale Dinges and Martha Bell Haley, both of Luray; and three grandchildren.
A funeral service was conducted on Friday, March 5, at the Beahm’s Chapel Church by Pastor George Milgram and Pastor Paul Markee. Burial was in the church cemetery. |

Mary Loring Harvey
Mary Loring Harvey, 92, of Luray, died on Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Page Memorial Hospital.
She was born on April 29, 1917, in Luray and was a daughter of the late Luther St. Elmo and Ressie Carol Cave Miller.
Her husband, Warder O’Dare “Curley” Harvey, preceded her in death.
She is survived by two daughters, Ann H. Darnell of Rileyville, and Brenda H. Beahm of Luray; two sons, Timothy C. and Warder M. “Buzzy” Harvey, both of Luray; a sister, Anna Mae Miller of Luray; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Phillip Lee Harvey.
A funeral service was conducted on Saturday, March 6, at the Bradley Funeral Home by the Rev. Eric Croft. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Luray. |

Stephen Herbert Kauffman
Stephen Herbert Kauffman, 61, of Luray, died on Friday, March 5, 2010.
He was born on March 9, 1948, in Washington, D.C., and was a son of the late Frederick Elon and Louise Pauline Marschall Kauffman.
Mr. Kauffman worked as a maintenance supervisor at Page Memorial Hospital. He was an Army veteran, having served during the Vietnam War.
On April 16, 1973, he married Veronica Anne Kauffman, who survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Jeanette Marie Kite of Luray; a son, Gregory Wayne Kauffman of Charlestown, R.I.; a brother, Kenneth Wayne Kauffman of Goose Creek, S.C.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Frederick Kauffman.
A funeral service was conducted on Monday, March 8, at the Mauck Meeting House by Dr. Rickard L. Worden and the Rev. Warren P. Brubaker. Burial was in the Kauffman family cemetery in Luray. |

Mary Virginia “Louise” Shifflett Warble
Mary Virginia “Louise” Shifflett Warble, 86, of Staunton, died on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at Envoy of Staunton.
She was born on Oct. 7, 1923, in Shenandoah and was a daughter of the late Clarence William and Rosie Anna Womack Shifflett.
Mrs. Warble moved to the Rockingham County area from Maryland in 1975. She was a homemaker and a member of the Brethren church.
On April 3, 1950, she married Charles V. Warble, who died on April 27, 1994.
She is survived by two sons, Ward Williamson of Harrisonburg, and Jeffrey C. Breeden of Staunton; one sister, Barbara Ann Falls of Linville; two brothers, Robert Shifflett of Grottoes, and Clarence Shifflett of Hagerstown, Md.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was conducted on Wednesday, March 10, at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel in Weyers Cave by the Rev. Don Smith and Chaplain Duane Burleigh. Burial was in the Humes Run Cemetery.

Mildred J. Lam
Mildred J. Lam, 82, formerly of Shenandoah, died on Monday, March 1, 2010 at Journey’s Crossing in Elkton, where she had been a resident for three years.
She was born on March 11, 1927, in Rockingham County and was a daughter of the late Arthur Clarence “Bart” and Beatrise Pearl Rion Davis.
Mrs. Lam graduated from Elkton High School in 1944 and was a life member of the Bethel United Church of Christ near Elkton, where she served as Sunday school teacher for many years. She was a homemaker.
On March 22, 1947 she married Grover Wesley “Shorty” Lam, who died on Jan. 11, 1984.
She is survived by a son, Darryl W. Lam of Culpeper; two daughters, Judy L. Jewell and Joy C. Lam, both of Shenandoah; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Arnold C. Davis; and a sister, Irene Lester.
A memorial service was conducted on Thursday, March 4, at the Bethel United Church of Christ by Pastor Dan Bassett. Burial was private in the Rest Haven Cemetery in Shenandoah.

William Emory Smith
William Emory Smith, 60, of Stanley, died on Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at MontVue Nursing Home.
Mr. Smith was born on Dec. 15, 1949, in Rockville, Md., and was a son of the late Emory Julian and Ida Mae Jewell Smith.
He is survived by a sister, Alice Marie Booth of Raleigh, N.C.

Clarence Sherman “One Eye” Bailey
Clarence Sherman “One Eye” Bailey, 82, of Stanley, died on Monday, March 1,2010, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
He was born on Nov. 16, 1927, in Shenandoah and was a son of the late Charlie and Vinda D. Meadows Bailey.
Mr. Bailey had worked as a contractor and brick mason.
His wife, the former Evelyn Mae Painter, died on June 23, 1977.
He is survived by a son, Robert Earl Bailey of Stanley; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ausby W., Owen M. and Floyd F. Bailey; and two sisters, Bertha Dovel and Louise Stanley.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 20, at the Antioch Bible Church by Pastor Frank Painter. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. |
