Musicians win at Rock Lotto

Started as house shows and reignited last year as a charity event, Rock Lotto is a chance for local musicians to play with new people and test their creativity. Two months ago, 70 people signed up to be part of a random drawing that would split them into 14 bands. From there, they would have two months to come up with about 20 minutes of original material, with this year offering the choice of doing a cover song. If the bands work well together and feel confident, they perform at one of two nights for audience judging.

Man’s best friend becomes man’s best helper

Harley, a 3-year-old Labrador retriever, jumps up on the living room couch, circles and plops down. Resting his large black head on owner Zach Shifflett’s lap, Harley thumps his tail on a cushion as he chews his favorite toy — a sock monkey. Shifflett gives the pooch a belly rub.

Hey, Skip! You know what? Come on in here. I know you want a car!” yells Anita McDaniel as she runs out of her office.

Stories About Local Bands and Artists

A dose of comedy’s big buzz

Ten years ago, Bill Del Gallo set his VCR to record the stand-up comedy showcase, “Comedy Central Presents.” He watched the tape over and over, mimicking the jokes of Lewis Black, well aware that “the biggest faux pas is to steal stuff from another comedian,” he says.

Red River Rollercoaster is on a roll
Most musicians probably dream of winning awards, selling millions of records and playing sold-out arenas. Chris Howdyshell dreams of small audiences, steady gigs and the ultimate perk — bottled water.

Coming home
Jarrod Smith grew up playing guitar for friends at parties in Bergton, 30 miles northwest of Harrisonburg. Bergton is a small town with a population a little more than 500, and its big event is the annual fair in August.

Advantage: Napp
John Naparlo is silent now, drowned out by the country tunes of Johnny Napp. Naparlo loves basketball and Napp, music.  It’s too bad Naparlo and Napp are one in the same.
