Musicians win at Rock Lotto



Started as house shows and reignited last year as a charity event, Rock Lotto is a chance for local musicians to play with new people and test their creativity. Two months ago, 70 people signed up to be part of a random drawing that would split them into 14 bands. From there, they would have two months to come up with about 20 minutes of original material, with this year offering the choice of doing a cover song. If the bands work well together and feel confident, they perform at one of two nights for audience judging.

Man’s best friend becomes man’s best helper



Harley, a 3-year-old Labrador retriever, jumps up on the living room couch, circles and plops down. Resting his large black head on owner Zach Shifflett’s lap, Harley thumps his tail on a cushion as he chews his favorite toy — a sock monkey. Shifflett gives the pooch a belly rub.
