James Madison coach Louis Rowe yells to his team during the first half of a game this past season in Harrisonburg.

HARRISONBURG — James Madison released it’s non-conference men’s basketball schedule Wednesday and the Dukes once again have a slate featuring multiple road games against in-state opponents, including defending NCAA champion Virginia.

JMU, entering the fourth season under coach Louis Rowe, returns four starters from a team that went 14-19 last season and welcomes seven newcomers. The Dukes will make their debut Nov. 2 at 4 p.m. in an exhibition against crosstown foe Eastern Mennonite.

The Dukes then open the regular season Nov. 6 at the Convocation Center against UNC Charlotte.

That’s followed by a Nov. 10 trip to Charlottesville to face the Cavaliers, who defeated Texas Tech for the national title in April. It will be the 11th meeting between the schools and the first since 2014 when Virginia beat JMU in Harrisonburg. The Cavs lead the all-time series 10-0.

The Dukes will also play road games at Old Dominion, George Mason and Radford. It’s likely all four in-state opponents play return games at JMU’s new Atlantic Union Bank Center during the 2020-21 season.

JMU’s 2019-20 home slate also features games against Division III Shenandoah, New Hampshire, Coppin State, East Carolina and Charleston Southern. The Dukes play at Fordham on Dec. 20 before Colonial Athletic Association play begins.
