Stonewall Finds Win Column
Improving Lady Generals Defeat Buffalo Gap, Riverheads In Front Of Home Crowds

Quicksburg - It’s hard to keep focus in any sport when starting a season 0-13, however that’s just what the Stonewall Jackson High School softball team did.

Following competitive Shenandoah District outings at Riverheads and Page County, Stonewall won its first game of the season 8-4 over Buffalo Gap last Wednesday. Then, after keeping up with top-ranked Luray in a 5-1 road loss, the Lady Generals won their second straight home game 19-4 in five innings against Riverheads Monday.

“We’ve taken our share of thumpings this year,” Stonewall head coach Mike Hunt said. “So, yes, it was nice to be on the other end.”

It would take Stonewall’s eight previous games to surpass Monday night’s offensive production of 19 runs. It didn’t help Riverheads that it was without both of their listed pitchers, as junior Haley Kirschnick was unavailable and freshman Bre McDearmon was out sick.

Sound defense and pitching is what has gotten Stonewall to turn the corner and find the win column, according to Hunt.

“We’re developing some consistency,” he said. “And tonight we got some key hits. We took advantage of some wild pitching, but I liked the pace of our hitters. They weren’t over-anxious.”
