Jim and Anna Bishop of Harrisonburg marked their 50th wedding anniversary on July 15 with 70 of their closest family members, relatives and friends with a celebration held at Community Mennonite Church, where they have been members since 1973.
Jim and Anna were married July 22, 1967, by Bishop Joseph L. Gross at Frazer Mennonite Church in Malvern, Pa. They graduated from Eastern Mennonite University that year.
Jim was an editor-writer with the former Mennonite Board of Missions in Elkhart, Ind., from 1967 to 1971, and then was public information officer for his alma mater for 40 years before retiring in 2011. He did extensive freelance writing, including the “Virginia Ham” column for Mennonite World Review and “Bishop’s Mantle” for the Harrisonburg Daily News-Record, as well as photography and radio programming throughout his career.
Anna taught first-grade, pre-K and kindergarten for 29 years in Elkhart and in the Rockingham County Public School System before retiring in 2011. She also taught and directed the primary Sunday school program of her church, where she continues to teach.
The Bishops have two daughters, Jennifer L. Hummel of Weyers Cave and Sara A. Kiser of Hinton, five grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
