Elwood Hammer, 91, of Shenandoah, died on Thursday, April 25, 2019. He had resided at Life Care Center in New Market for the past five years.

He was born on Feb. 2, 1928, in Rockingham County and was a son of the late Ashby Hammer and Sara Merica Hammer.

Mr. Hammer was employed at the Virginia Oak Tannery in Luray and was an avid gardener.

His wife, Nadine Jeanette McAlister Hammer, died in 2013.

He is survived by two sons, Clyde and Allen Hammer; two daughters, Sharon Taylor and Annie Meadows; two sisters, Sheila Good and Marie Shifflett; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sons, Bobby, Robert and William Hammer; five brothers, Roy, Claude, Ed, Lee and Kelly Hammer; eight sisters, Vicky Lam, Virginia Hitt, Arbutus Meadows, Margaret Shifflett, Audrey Teter, Peggy Stanton, Frances Lam and Ruth Turner; and a granddaughter.

A graveside service was conducted on Sunday, April 28, at the McAlister Family Cemetery by Pastor Jimmy Kite.
