The basketball-crazed state of North Carolina has something other than college hoops to get excited about. It turns out its football teams are pretty good, too. For the first time ever, the state’s “Big Four” Atlantic Coast Conference schools of North Carolina, North Carolina State, Wake Forest and Duke -- have all started at least 2-0. And Appalachian State of the Sun Belt Conference pulled off a huge upset by winning at No. 6 Texas A&M. No. 16 N.C. State and No. 19 Wake Forest represent the state in the AP Top 25 while Appalachian State and UNC are just outside the poll.

There may be no reason to put second-ranked Alabama and No. 17 Baylor on upset alert even though both are playing Sun Belt Conference teams in Week 3. Two Sun Belt teams beat Top 10 teams last Saturday. Appalachian State won 17-14 at Texas A&M, and Marshall won 26-21 at Notre Dame. Alabama slipped out of the AP’s No. 1 spot after escaping Texas with a 20-19 victory. But the Crimson Tide are nearly 50-point favorites against Louisiana-Monroe. Texas State is a more than a four-touchdown underdog going to Baylor.

Last week was a good reminder to never shrug off a Saturday slate of college football games that appears to be short on marquee matchups. Intrigue arises in odd places, even without the obvious “big games.” This week’s schedule pops even less than that. If not for No. 24 Texas A&M and No. 25 Oregon squeezing into the bottom of the AP Top 25 there would be no games matching ranked teams this week. Still, there is still plenty of alluring games heading into the weekend.

Marshall's campus is still buzzing after the Thundering Herd toppled Notre Dame in South Bend. Marshall beat a Top 10 team on the road for the second time in school history and became the talk of college football. Marshall coach Charles Huff, who was hired off Nick Saban's staff at Alabama in 2021, says he responded to 350 text messages after the Notre Dame win. Quarterback Henry Colombi says the Marshall community is still abuzz, a feeling he says won't go away any time soon. The challenge for the team is setting aside the attention and turning to the next tasks, another game on the road, against Bowling Green.

Just two weeks into the season and it looks like so much we thought might be true in college football is wrong. No. 1 Alabama needed every little bit of misfortune that conspired against Texas, plus a Heisman-worthy performance by its Heisman Trophy winner, to avoid its first regular-season nonconference loss since 2007 against the Longhorns. No. 6 Texas A&M and No. 8 Notre Dame were not so fortunate. The Aggies and Irish were Sun Belted, losing at home to Appalachian State and Marshall, respectively. Throw on top of that Washington State knocking off No. 19 Wisconsin in Madison, and it was a difficult day for double-digit favorites.

Kyle Vantrease scored on an 8-yard run with 36 seconds left after Nebraska had taken its first lead, and Georgia Southern beat the three-touchdown-favorite Cornhuskers 45-42. The Huskers’ Timmy Bleekrode was wide left with a 52-yard field goal attempt as time ran out and Georgia Southern players ran onto the field to celebrate the program’s first win in 13 games against Power Five opponents. The loss turns up the pressure on embattled Nebraska coach Scott Frost, who now faces a home game next week against No. 7 Oklahoma.

Nebraska has fired football coach Scott Frost after a 1-2 start to the season. The situation was so dire that athletic director Trev Alberts made the move only three weeks before Frost's contract buyout would have been cut in half. The Cornhuskers lost 45-42 to Georgia Southern as a three-touchdown favorite at home on Saturday night. Frost was 16-31 three games into his fifth season. Associate head coach Mickey Joseph was named interim coach for the rest of the season. Alberts said there was no attempt to negotiate a lower buyout and that Frost would receive the $15 million owed to him.

Georgia has reclaimed the top spot in The Associated Press college football poll and Oklahoma State, Kentucky and Arkansas moved into the top 10 after an upset-filled weekend. The defending national champion Bulldogs started the season at No. 3 in the AP Top 25. It took them two weeks to get back to where they spent most of last year. Georgia received 53 of 63 first-place votes. No. 2 Alabama, which needed a late field goal to hold off Texas, received nine first-place votes and No. 3 Ohio State got one. No. 4 Michigan and No. 5 Clemson held their places. Oklahoma moved up a spot to No. 6. And Southern California jumped three places to No. 7. Notre Dame tumbled out all the way from No. 8 to snap a streak of 80 straight poll appearances.
