Joseph “Joe” Rocco Colella, 80, of Grottoes, passed away Monday, June 4, 2018, at Sentara RMH Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 9, 1938, in Rome, N.Y., and was a son of the late Benjamin and Francis Colella.

He was a member of the Mount Olive Brethren Church of McGaheysville.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he relocated to Richmond and worked as a loan officer. He later became self-employed with Pepperidge Farm Cookies and Crackers for 22 years.

He spent numerous years after his retirement with Pepperidge Farm as a common carrier for various companies located in the Shenandoah Valley.

He was an avid cyclist who rode his bike around the town of Grottoes.

He married Mary Supples Colella on July 10, 1961.

Surviving, along with his wife of nearly 57 years, are two daughters, Suzanne Shifflett of Grottoes and Lisa Hinchee of Staunton; a son, Joseph A. “Tony” Colella of Nicholasville, Ky.; five grandchildren; and a sister, Linda Olmstead of New Hartford, N.Y.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 7, at Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 8, at Mount Olive Brethren Church. Dr. Fredric G. Miller will officiate. Interment will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.
